So I am a Marketing Director for a nonprofit arts organization and a Marketing Representative for Qdoba in Grafton, WI. And I have seen the power of networking on the web with my Paramount Records project. I love marketing because it involves creative communication, intuitive and strategic planning, networking, and seeing results!
I have been networking online since about 2004. It started with getting involved in some forums relating to blues, codependency, and Christianity. I also took some classes online through MATC. AND I DISCOVERED THE POWER OF EMAIL! lol. I began my own websites and have been blogging and posting for the past 5+ years.
Since then it has been MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, personal websites, etc…. My time online continues to increase.
WHY AM I DOING THIS????? Good question! Well, I believe in networking. Networking is an intangible asset. It is a huge commodity. I also believe in educating and brainstorming. About a year ago, I read a book called “The Rise of the Creative Class” that convinced me to continue my creative online networking.
The great thing is that I have had opportunities come my way that wouldn’t have otherwise. I am getting to know circles of friends that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. There is an element of risk in becoming so transparent online. There is the fear of posting something that somebody takes the wrong way or, even worse, identity theft.
MY home life and my work life are a bit too much intertwined and I need to figure out how to “turn off” from work. I spend my free times in the mornings and evenings doing what? Well, not exercising like I used to for hours….THAT’S FOR SURE! I spend my free time NETWORKING ONLINE. It’s quite addicting and offers a great escape and sense of accomplishment.
My hope is that my online networking “seeds” will someday flourish and I will be able to do things and have connections that I always dreamed of having. I enjoy “creating a buzz” online and I enjoy the entire “creative communication” aspect.
I LOVE social media. But still trying to figure out where the boundaries are.
